Lip Rejuvenation in Juno Beach, FL: Natural Lip Fillers and More

Lip rejuvenation restores the volume, shape, and smooth skin that lips lose with age, using hyaluronic acid fillers, fat transfer, a lip flip, or laser resurfacing depending on what has changed. At Perfect Skin MD in Juno Beach, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Schroeder designs every lip treatment around your natural proportions and performs it herself.

How Lips Change With Age

Lips do not only get thinner. They change in three different ways, and the right lip rejuvenation plan depends on which ones are happening for you.

  • Volume loss: the lips deflate, the upper lip lengthens, and the corners of the mouth can turn down.
  • Skin changes: vertical lip lines, often called smoker's lines, and crepey, sun-damaged skin around the mouth.
  • Loss of shape: the Cupid's bow flattens and the border of the lip, called the vermilion border, becomes less defined.

Filler treats volume well, but it does not erase etched lines or sun damage. That is why lips treated with filler alone can look heavy rather than younger. Read more in our article on lip rejuvenation that goes beyond filler.

Lip Rejuvenation Treatment Options

Hyaluronic acid lip fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Revanesse® add soft volume, restore the lip border, and improve symmetry. The FDA has approved dermal fillers for lip augmentation in adults age 22 and older, as noted in its FDA guidance on dermal fillers. Fat transfer to the lips

A small amount of your own fat is harvested, purified, and placed into the lips in tiny droplets. Because it is your own tissue, there is no product allergy, and some of the transferred fat survives long term. See our fat transfer page for details.

Botox lip flip and lip lines

Tiny doses of Botox can relax the muscle that purses the lips, softening lines and letting the upper lip roll slightly outward. Botox Cosmetic is not FDA-approved for the lip area, so this is an off-label use, as the Botox Cosmetic prescribing information shows. Dr. Schroeder uses it conservatively so speaking and drinking feel normal. Read more about Botox for lip contour.

CO2 laser resurfacing for lip lines

Deep vertical lines and sun damage around the mouth respond best to resurfacing, which rebuilds collagen in the skin itself. CO2 laser resurfacing is the strongest option, with about a week of recovery for most fractional treatments.

Microneedling and radiofrequency

For earlier texture changes and fine lines, Procell microchanneling or Infini RF microneedling can stimulate collagen with less downtime than a laser.

Correcting overfilled lips

If filler from a previous treatment looks lumpy, has migrated above the lip line, or simply feels like too much, hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved with hyaluronidase and the lips rebalanced. See examples in the filler dissolve before and after gallery.

Which Lip Rejuvenation Treatment Fits Your Concern

Your concernWhere treatment usually starts
Thin or deflated lipsHyaluronic acid filler or fat transfer
Flat Cupid's bow or blurred lip borderPrecise filler placement along the border
Vertical lip linesCO2 laser, microneedling, or a little filler and Botox
Upper lip that disappears when smilingBotox lip flip
Downturned corners of the mouthFiller, sometimes combined with Botox
Overfilled or uneven lipsDissolving with hyaluronidase, then rebalancing

Many patients get the most natural result from a combination, such as a modest amount of filler for shape plus resurfacing for the skin around the mouth.

What to Expect From Lip Rejuvenation

  1. Consultation. Dr. Schroeder studies your lip shape, proportions, movement, skin quality, and history of cold sores or previous filler.
  2. Your plan. You get a recommendation that may include one treatment or a staged combination.
  3. Treatment. Lip filler usually takes about 30 minutes. A numbing cream is applied, and many lip fillers also contain lidocaine for comfort.
  4. Recovery. Expect swelling for the first few days. Avoid strenuous exercise until the next day, and skip alcohol and heat for about 24 hours.
  5. Follow-up. Final shape is assessed after swelling settles, and small refinements are made if needed.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that redness, swelling, tenderness, and occasional bruising after fillers tend to clear within 7 to 14 days, in its filler FAQs. See results in the dermal filler before and after gallery.

Lip Rejuvenation Safety and Cold Sores

The lips have a rich blood supply, which is why lip filler should be treated as a medical procedure. The FDA identifies unintended injection into a blood vessel as the most serious risk of dermal fillers, and it recommends choosing a licensed provider with experience in dermatology or plastic surgery.

  • Cold sores: disclose any history, since an antiviral may be prescribed before treatment.
  • Blood thinners: tell Dr. Schroeder about aspirin, fish oil, and similar supplements, which raise the chance of bruising.
  • Timing: book at least two weeks before a wedding or major event.
  • Warning signs: call the office right away for unusual pain or white, gray, or blue skin near the injection site.

Lip Rejuvenation Questions

How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid lip filler typically lasts several months to about a year. The AAD lists 4 to 12 months for hyaluronic acid fillers in general, and lips often sit toward the shorter end because they move constantly. Fat transfer can last longer because some of the transferred fat cells survive permanently.

How much swelling is normal after lip filler?

Lips usually swell more than other treated areas, especially for the first two to three days. Swelling, tenderness, and occasional bruising generally settle within one to two weeks, so plan treatment at least two weeks before an important event.

Will my lips look overfilled?

Dr. Schroeder plans lip rejuvenation around your facial proportions and adds volume gradually, often over more than one visit. The goal is lips that look like a rested, better-defined version of your own, not a different shape.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is how overfilled or migrated lip filler from a previous provider is corrected before the lips are rebalanced.

Can I get lip filler if I get cold sores?

Yes, in most cases. Tell Dr. Schroeder about any history of cold sores, because she may prescribe an antiviral medicine before treatment. Lip filler is never injected during an active outbreak.

What is a lip flip?

A lip flip uses a small amount of botulinum toxin to relax the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward. Treating the lips with Botox is an off-label use, and the effect is subtle and temporary, usually lasting a few months.
