Nail disorders

Nail problems come in various forms and have multiple causes:Ā Resolving Unsightly, Painful Nails at the Source

Nail disorders are not limited to fungus with associated yellowing, crumbling, thick, and otherwise unsightly nails. A range of conditions can affect your nail health, and some of our findings at Perfect Skin MD may conclude that concerning changes to the nails are secondary to systemic disease. Not unlike skin conditions, systemic illnesses can present as nail disorders. The nails may provide clues into the underlying health of your body. Whatever the case, fixing the problem requires an accurate diagnosis by our board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon in Jupiter, Florida, Dr. Susan Schroeder.

Conditions and Associated SymptomsĀ

Infections can present in a variety of different ways on our nails. These symptoms include:

  • Redness and swelling around the nails.
  • Green or even black discoloration on the nail.Ā
  • Yellow nails.Ā
  • Nails that detach from the bed and appear to be elevated (a condition called onycholysis).

Other changes to the color and appearance of the nails (such as icepick-like pits and thick, overgrown nails) can be indicative of skin conditions, including:

  • Psoriasis .
  • Ichthyosis.
  • Atopic dermatitis.Ā
  • Alopecia areata.

Deep grooves or lines in the nails and spoon-shaped nails that dip or plateau in the center of the nail are associated with underlying conditions from nutritional deficiencies to problems with the lungs, heart, liver, and GI tract. Changes to the colors of the nails can also provide clues into underlying conditions. For instance, anemia is associated with pale nails. Poor circulation may be to blame for blue nails. Liver disease may present as white or half-pink/half-white nails.

The Importance of Tailored Treatment

Without proper treatment, symptoms only get worse. Additionally, an underlying systemic illness may remain undetected if nail abnormalities are not evaluated by a dermatologist like Dr. Schroeder. Depending on your specific needs, she may recommend or prescribe topical creams or oral medications to fight infections. Onsite therapies may also be combined with medications to resolve fungal infections once and for all. Underlying skin conditions, such as psoriasis, amy also be addressed. Resolution starts with a consultation. Call Perfect Skin MD in Jupiter, Florida, at [phone] to book your appointment today.
